What is Major League Baseball (MLB)
A Beginner Guide to Major League Baseball
Rules & Regulations
The rules of MLB are quite complex and vary between the American League and the National League. The most basic rules of the game are that it is played by nine players on each team, and the game is divided into nine innings. Each team’s objective is to score more runs than the other team, and the team with the most runs at the end of the game wins. The game is governed by Umpires who enforce the rules and make calls on the field.Teams & Players
MLB consists of 30 teams, divided into two leagues- the American League and the National League. Each team consists of a roster of 25 players, with nine players on the field at any given time. The players include the pitcher, catcher, first baseman, second baseman, third baseman, shortstop, left fielder, center fielder, and right fielder. The players are managed by the manager, who is responsible for setting the lineup, making substitutions, and making decisions during the game.Scoring & Statistics
MLB games are scored through a combination of hits, walks, and runs. A hit is when a batter successfully hits the ball and reaches a base safely, while a walk is when a batter is given a free pass to first base due to four balls being thrown by the pitcher. Runs are scored when a player advances around all of the bases and touches home plate. Statistics are kept for each player and team in the form of batting average, earned run average, and other metrics.Postseason & Championships
At the end of the regular season, the teams with the best records in each division will advance to the postseason. The postseason is a series of single-elimination playoffs that culminate in the World Series, which is a best-of-seven series between the champions of the American League and the National League. The winner of the World Series is crowned the champion of Major League Baseball.Major League Baseball For Dummies
